Phone: (506) 457-1798 Homepage: http://www.autocityfredericton.ca Info: Should I trade-in my vehicle or sell it privately? Hi, my name is Derek Sullivan the owner of Auto City located at 40 Main St. I would like to point out the advantages and disadvantages of selling your vehicle privately and trading it in at a dealership. Let’s first discuss the advantages of selling privately: • You should be able to realize a higher profit on your vehicle, due to the fact that dealers need to purchase your vehicle at discount to recondition the vehicle and eventually resell your vehicle at a profit. • You are able to tell a potential buyer the vehicle history, providing a level of comfort that the buyer may need prior to purchasing. Let’s now discuss some disadvantages of selling privately: • You the seller are legally responsible as to the declaration of the condition of the vehicle and may need to spend money to repair the vehicle to make it a viable sale. • You will have to spend time researching what other similar vehicles are selling for to market your vehicle at an appropriate price point. • You will have to take the time to show the vehicle and run the risk of the vehicle not selling, due to improper pricing or mechanical issues. • You are responsible for the transfer of ownership and must go in person to make the transfer. If the transfer is not made you are still the legal owner of the vehicle and may be legally responsible for the actions of the purchaser with the vehicle. Next let’s discuss the disadvantages of trading your vehicle in at a dealer: • You will not receive the full retail value of your trade due to the fact that the dealer is taking a risk and will need to spend time and money reconditioning the car along with marketing and storage expenses. Let’s now discuss the advantages of trading in your vehicle: • Dealer will take the car as is leaving you no legal responsibility. • You don’t have to spend time pricing, showing and marketing your vehicle. • The Dealer handles all of the ownership transfers, there on the spot. • You also receive tax savings on your new vehicle purchase as the trade in is deducted from the new vehicle purchase price bringing the taxable purchase price down. For example: You wish to purchase a $20000 vehicle, the dealer offers you a $5000 trade in value of your vehicle, this brings the total new vehicle purchase price down to $15000 for a tax savings of $650. In the end you would need to sell your vehicle for $5650 privately along with money to recondition, time to research, market and show your vehicle just to get value from selling privately. How do Dealers price the trade value? You may have at one time taken your vehicle to 2 different dealers and received different trade-in quotes. All Dealers purchase the vehicles on their lot at the same cost; the only difference is that some Dealers price their retail lot sales differently to allow for an exaggerated trade-in value for their customers. So although one dealer may give you 10% more on your trade-in, be sure to compare their vehicles with similar vehicles at other dealers as most likely you will find that their prices are 10% higher than others.
